As part of our mission to share Newark's history, the Newark Historical Society participates in various community events throughout the year. In addition, we are proud to sponsor special educational events for our members and local history buffs. Our two signature events are the Founders' Day Celebration and the Annual Membership Meeting.

History Stroll: East Cleveland Avenue
Date: Saturday, September 9, 2023
Time: 10:00 am to 11:00 am
Place: Meet in the parking lot at the southwest corner of Cleveland Avenue and N. College Avenue

If you only know E. Cleveland Avenue as a traffic problem or a party destination, then this tour is for you. Find out how politics, world wars, railroads, and developers’ dreams shaped the neighborhoods along Newark’s most heavily travelled bypass route. The tour is offered in partnership with the Newark Parks & Recreation Department. All routes are ADA accessible and cover approximately 0.5 miles. This rain or shine event is free and open to the public. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. Ghostly Great Halloween History Tours
Dates: October 24, 26, 28 & 30
Time: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Place: Meet in front of Munroe Hall between the UD parking garage and Delaware Avenue
Fee: $5 Newark Residents, $8 Others Pre-registration is required (see below)
Back for the third year with new stories and old favorites, the Newark Historical Society presents ghost stories drawn from Newark history and delivered on site where they actually took place. Find out what Edgar Allen Poe really did in Newark, why you shouldn’t take a bath on the top floor of the Deer Park Hotel, and what happened when someone forgot to “look both ways” at the railroad crossing.These tours are offered in partnership with the Newark Parks & Recreation Department.
